9 Lives

Cats are the ones who have 9 lives, right? I am pretty sure that we have a dog with 9 of them. In a very short 5 months, we have had a few very serious run-ins with our puppy, Socks. I swear that the humane society is going to show up on our porch looking to take Socks away due to suspected abuse…
I was in Asheville, NC visiting Nathan and his family for the holidays. I got a phone call on Saturday morning from Matt. The phone call went like this:
Me: “Hello?”
Matt: (serious tone) “I’ve had a rough morning.”
Me: “OK…”
An extended pause…
Matt: “I tripped over the rug at the top of the stairs and fell down. Socks was halfway down the stairs and I landed on him. He broke three of his metatarsals in his paw.”
Me: “OK….”
The conversation continued with me ensuring that Matt didn’t also hurt himself and with a few more questions about Socks’ condition. Long story short, Socks had to have his little paw reset to the correct position and he is now in a cast/sling for 4-6 weeks.
He is doing OK, although in some pain as he whines occasionally. Matt says that he didn’t start the fussing until I got home on Sunday. I suspect that is more that the anesthesia wore off than Socks taking full advantage of the “mommy card.” The hardest part is carrying a 50 lb tank around to take him outside and what not. Socks can sort of limp, but we want to give him a few days for the swelling to go down. I remember all too well the pain that results due to broken bones.
I swear on my life that we treat this dog like a small prince. I have no clue how these injuries keep happening to him. By my calculations, Socks has 7 lives left. I sure hope that he does not use anymore for a really long time!
PS: I added about 20 pages of new pictures in my photo gallery. Take a look if you care to.

Poor thing — he seems to be having a streak of bad luck. I’m sure he’ll be better in no time.
