Easter in the Eyes of a Child

I think that it is a part of life that as you get older, holidays start to lose their magic. Getting up early on Christmas morning is not quite as fun. Valentine’s Day starts to include wearing a red shirt to work and if you are a lucky one, flowers from your husband. Easter baskets stop because you are still working off the Christmas season pounds as an adult.
This Easter was a little different for me. I got to see a holiday through the eyes of a child for the first time in a very long time. Matt and I were invited to my Aunt Diane and Uncle Jim’s house for an early Easter dinner. I jumped at the chance to go because I love their food and because I do not get to see my extended family as much as I would like to. My Aunt and Uncle had Easter baskets set up for their grandchildren who were also there, but they waited until after dinner to let the kids see the baskets. When Madeleine, who is just shy of 3, saw her Me-Me walking towards her with a basket full of treats, her eyes got huge and sparkly. She said, “Oh My, Oh My” over and over again. It was the cutest thing that I have ever seen a child do. Granted, Maddie is my cousin’s baby and I am inclined to think that everything she does is above average and absolutely adorable. Madeleine proceeded to take in her basket in full detail, giving each and every item in the basket a full inspection. Ethan, who is a little younger than Madeleine, did not light up as soon as he saw the basket. However, when Amiee gave him a chocolate disc that was almost as big as his face, he started chewing on it, paused, backed away and looked at the chocolate, and then broke into giggles. The adults sat at the table and watched Maddie and Ethan enjoy their Easter for a long time. I suppose that is the way life is; you start to lose the magic of a holiday only to see it unfold in the eyes of your child. I am not sure, but I think the second time around, the magic is sweeter.
I hope you all have a Happy Easter!
